What is physical examination?

This is  a routine test your primary care provider (PCP) performs to check your overall health. There are different tests that can be performed during your physical examination depending on your age and medical or family history.

What is the purpose of an annual physical exam?

A physical examination helps your PCP to determine the general status of your health and provides you with the opportunity  talk to your PCP about any ongoing pain or symptoms that you’re experiencing or any other health concerns that you might have. A physical examination is recommended at least once a year, especially in people over the age of 50. Annual physical is used to:

  • Check for possible diseases so they can be treated early
  • Identify any issues that may become medical concerns in the future
  • Update necessary immunizations
  • Ensure that you are maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine
  • Build a relationship with your PCP

How do you prepare for a physical examination?

Take all relevant documents, including those listed below, to your visit:

  • Individual review of vaccination requirements for the region being visited.
  • Travel recommendations for the region based on current health and safety precautions.
  • Vaccinations may be initiated at the time of the initial consult.
  • List of current medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and any herbal supplements
  • List of any symptoms or pain you are experiencing
  • Results from any recent or relevant tests
  • Medical and surgical history
  • Names and contact information for other doctors you may have seen recently
  • If you have an implanted device such as a pacemaker or defibrillator, bring a copy of the front and back of your device card
  • Any additional questions you would like answered

How is a physical examination performed?

Initially, you  will be required to provide some information including your medical history, any allergies, past surgeries, or symptoms you might have. You  may also asked about your lifestyle, including if you exercise, smoke, or drink alcohol, after which your  PCP will then examine your whole body for any abnormalities. He will subsequently go over his findings with you and make necessary recommendations.

If you need a physical exam call Eastway Medical Clinic and Urgent Care in Charlotte North Carolina to schedule an appointment; our highly skilled and experienced doctors will be glad to help. You may also book an appointment online, or simply walk in during regular business hours.

What is DOT Physical?

This is a medical examination the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires all drivers that operated commercial motor vehicle to undergo to ensure that they can safely operate their vehicles on health grounds.

What should I bring with me for DOT Physical?

  • Medical Records
  • List of prescriptions medications, and dosage you currently take
  • Glasses,  or if you wear contact let your doctor know
  • Hearing Aids

What should I expect during a DOT Physical?

The following tests are all part of the overall exam:

  • Review of your Medical History
  • Physical Exam including blood pressure check
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Urinalysis

How often is a DOT Physical required?

CDL drivers must take the DOT physical every two years, however, if you have a condition that needs monitoring, such as high blood pressure, you may be required to get a physical more often. Once you have passed your DOT physical the doctor in charge will give you a certificate, and if your employer needs a copy directly from the physician you can sign and waiver and have them request that.

Visit Eastway Medical Clinic and Urgent Care in Charlotte North Carolina if you need a DOT physical and our doctor who is a licensed medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry will assist you in completing your examination.

What is a Sports Physical?

This exam helps determine whether it’s safe for you to participate in a certain sport. Most states actually require that kids and teens have a sports physical before they can start a new sport or begin a new competitive season.

Why is a Sports Physical important?

A sports physical can help you find out about and deal with health problems that might interfere with your participation in a sport.

The two main parts to a sports physical are the medical history and the physical exam.

Medical History

This part of the exam includes questions about:

  • serious illnesses among family members
  • illnesses that you had when you were younger or may have now, such as asthma, diabetes, or epilepsy
  • previous hospitalizations or surgeries
  • allergies (to insect bites, for example)
  • past injuries (including concussions, sprains, or bone fractures)
  • whether you’ve ever passed out, felt dizzy, had chest pain, or had trouble breathing during exercise
  • any medications that you are on (including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and prescription medications)

 Physical Examination

During the physical part of the exam, the doctor will usually:

  • Record your height and weight
  • Take a blood pressure and pulse (heart rate and rhythm)
  • Test your vision
  • Check your heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat
  • Evaluate your posture, joints, strength, and flexibility

At the end of your exam, the doctor will either fill out and sign a form if everything checks out OK or, in some cases, recommend a follow-up exam, additional tests, or specific treatment for medical problems.

If you or a family member needs sports physical, visit or call Eastway Medical Clinic and Urgent Care in Charlotte North Carolina for an appointment. We also provide same day appointment and take walk-ins.
