What is Travel Medicine?

This is a branch of medicine that specializes in diseases and conditions that are acquired during travel.  A travel medicine clinic is a clinic with doctors knowledgeable in medical conditions and other issues related to travel.  The goal of a pre-travel medical evaluation is to help travelers protect themselves against common diseases that may be mild but that will disrupt their trip and less common diseases that may be serious or even fatal. All travelers need to be up to date on routine vaccines they would normally get if they were not traveling.

A travel clinic will provide you with information on the health precautions needed to stay healthy while traveling, what to do if you become ill, any immunizations or medications you will need prior to your trip as well as medications to take in case of illness.

What diseases occur in travelers, and how can disease be prevented?

Travelers can pick up infectious diseases from contaminated food or water, from insect bites, animal bites, or from other people. Immunizations, medications, and simple precautions can reduce or eliminate the risk of many of these travel-related infections. While infectious disease is the most common concern for travelers, it is important to remember that the most common cause of death in travelers is motor-vehicle accidents.

What to expect at your travel consult?

The consultation will include:

  • Individual review of vaccination requirements for the region being visited.
  • Travel recommendations for the region based on current health and safety precautions.
  • Vaccinations may be initiated at the time of the initial consult.

What to do and know ahead of time?

Appointments should be scheduled well in advance (2-3 months) of the desired travel date because some vaccination requirements may take several months to be completed.

An initial consult requires a thirty-minute appointment.

If vaccinations are to be given, allow for a sixty-minute appointment time.

For personal travel, be sure to consult with your insurance company to see if your insurance benefit will cover these services. It is also wise to review your insurance policy and see what coverage is available to you should you become ill abroad including whether transport back home is covered.
